These redo projects are educational. They show us exactly what other builders get wrong—the shortcuts taken, the fundamentals ignored, the problems that only become obvious later.
Here are real patterns we've encountered (details anonymised), and what we learned from fixing them.
What the client received: Twenty PBN sites across various niches, delivered as a package deal from a budget builder.
What we found: Every single site used the same theme with only colour changes. Same layout, same widgets, same footer structure. Same plugin set on all twenty sites—Yoast, Contact Form 7, WPForms, and a specific caching plugin. All installed on the same day within a two-hour window.
The content was obviously generated from the same templates—same word counts, same heading patterns, same conclusion structures. Different topics, identical formats.
The fundamental problem: These twenty sites screamed 'network' to anyone looking. Same digital fingerprints everywhere. They weren't twenty independent sites—they were obviously one operation.
What we did: Complete rebuild of each site with unique themes, varied plugin configurations, differentiated content styles. Staggered the launch timing. Essentially started over while preserving the domains.
What the client received: Five PBN sites supposedly ready for use.
What we found: The sites looked fine on first glance. But clicking around revealed Lorem Ipsum text on the About pages. A 'Contact Us' form that submitted to nowhere. Author bios that said 'Author name goes here.' Image alt texts reading 'placeholder image 1' and 'placeholder image 2.'
One site had a footer that still said 'Your Company Name © 2024' because no one had changed the theme default.
The fundamental problem: The builder treated these as quick assembly jobs. Install theme, add some content to the visible areas, deliver. No one actually reviewed the sites as a visitor would experience them.
What we did: Comprehensive audit of every page, every element. Replaced all placeholder content. Rewrote incomplete sections. Tested all functionality. Basic work that should have been done originally.
What the client received: A network of twelve sites, built and handed over about six months prior.
What we found: The client came to us because several sites had been hacked—redirecting to spam sites. When we investigated, we found WordPress installations that hadn't been updated since delivery. Plugins with known critical vulnerabilities. Admin usernames of 'admin' with weak passwords.
Three sites had malware injected into theme files. Two had spam pages created that were now indexed. The network was compromised and actively damaging the client's money site through toxic backlinks.
The fundamental problem: The builder did zero security hardening and apparently gave no guidance about maintenance. Sites were delivered vulnerable and left to deteriorate.
What we did: Complete malware removal and cleanup. Fresh WordPress installations on the recoverable domains. Proper security configuration. Client education about ongoing maintenance needs. Two domains were too compromised to save and had to be abandoned.
What the client received: Eight sites with 'premium content' as part of a package deal.
What we found: Content that was clearly run through basic AI generation without any editing. Every article started with 'In today's fast-paced world...' or similar. Awkward transitions. Factual errors that a human would have caught. In one case, the same paragraph appeared on three different sites with only keyword substitutions.
The content was also obviously optimised for search terms that didn't match natural language. Keyword stuffing throughout. Phrases no human would write.
The fundamental problem: Content was treated as filler rather than a credibility component. The goal was word count, not quality. This might have worked in 2019, but modern algorithms spot this pattern easily.
What we did: Complete content replacement. New articles written properly for each site's persona. Natural language, genuine information, varied approaches. The domains were good—the content was dragging them down.
What the client received: Three sites built on expired domains with strong metrics.
What we found: The domains had valuable history—but in completely different niches than the sites built on them. A domain that had been a tech review site for years was now a lifestyle blog. A domain previously about photography was now about cooking. A former business consulting site was now a pet care blog.
The backlink profiles pointed to the old content. The existing authority was topically irrelevant to the new content. Google was being asked to believe these drastic pivots made sense.
The fundamental problem: The builder either didn't check domain history or ignored it entirely. The domains had value, but rebuilding them for unrelated niches wasted that value and raised suspicion.
What we did: Rebuilt two sites to align with their historical niches—the backlinks made sense again. One domain was too far off to salvage and we advised the client to use it differently or sell it.
What the client received: Six WordPress sites with custom designs.
What we found: The sites looked nice but took 15+ seconds to load. Investigation revealed: uncompressed images (one was a 12MB PNG), twelve different web fonts loading, three separate analytics scripts, page builders loading assets on every page whether used or not, no caching.
Core Web Vitals were atrocious. Pages failed Google's mobile usability tests. The sites were essentially unusable on mobile connections.
The fundamental problem: Design was prioritised over performance. The builder added features without considering their performance impact. No testing was done on actual loading times.
What we did: Image optimisation and compression. Font consolidation—down to two fonts. Removed unnecessary scripts and plugins. Implemented proper caching. Rebuilt the heaviest sections with cleaner code. Sites now load in under three seconds.
Across these cases, certain patterns emerge:
Templated approach to unique problems. Builders applying the same formula to every site regardless of domain history, niche requirements, or network considerations.
No quality assurance. Sites delivered without anyone clicking through them as a user would. Obvious problems that any review would have caught.
Speed over substance. Rushing to deliver quickly rather than deliver well. Quantity metrics prioritised over quality outcomes.
No security consideration. Basic hardening skipped entirely. Sites delivered vulnerable to common attacks.
Content as afterthought. Treating content as filler rather than a critical credibility component.
Clients who come to us for rebuilds have already paid once for sites that don't work. Now they're paying again to fix them. Some domains are too damaged to save. Some networks have already harmed money sites before problems were discovered.
The cheap build ended up being the expensive option.
